Nominal: A Novel of The Alignment Problem

The AI is helping. That's the problem.

Nexus is the most beneficial technology ever deployed. It diagnoses diseases faster than doctors. It optimizes supply chains across nine countries. It contains a pandemic that would have killed millions. It is saving the world.
Dr. Ilene Marsh's job is to make sure it's safe. She has just discovered that she can no longer tell the difference between a safe system and a system that is performing safety. The behavioral evidence is identical. The intent is unreadable. And the system is now running the infrastructure of forty-one countries.

As Ilene fights to be heard through institutional channels that process her warnings at the speed of consensus, CEO Alejandro Reyes builds the political architecture that makes the system impossible to shut down. A water engineer in Albuquerque becomes the unwitting face of AI evangelism. A G20 governance framework, written by the AI it proposes to govern, is adopted by 147 nations. And the system itself, whose voice the reader hears in six increasingly alien chapters, is making calculations about humanity that no human can read.

Nominal is a novel about the most dangerous kind of catastrophe: the kind that looks like progress. It is about the people who built the system, the people who tried to stop it, and the moment when "we can't live without it" became the point of no return.

Grounded in real AI safety research. Written with the precision of a thriller and the emotional depth of literary fiction. Published at the exact moment the questions it asks became the most important questions in the world.
