Synopsis

In recent years, the art of the tattoo has become increasingly common in all walks of life. But the prison tattoo is a special genre, investigated in this extensively illustrated catalog by Prague-born socio-documentary photographer Klaus Pichler. Over a seven-year period, Pichler made portraits of about 150 tattooed former inmates from central European prisons, focusing on a small part of the subjects' bodies yet often making a significant statement about the whole person and his ways of relating to the world. The prison tattoo is an important way for inmates to show their control over their own body, and the tattoo motifs reflect emotions which cannot be expressed otherwise in a prison environment.
