Small folio, pp [4, including index leaf], 676, bound in early 20th Century blue buckram cloth, a few small old library stamps, lightly occasional soiling, else internally clean and sound throughout, FIRST EDITION; the earlier issues of the North Briton, with contributionsby John Wilkes, who was also, like Bingley, prosecuted, have atrracted much attention and were often reprinted. Later volumes such as this are much less often met with, this once covering 101-207 inclusive but bound without issue 182, thus 106 issues, covering April 15th 1769 to February 16th 1771. This does not accord with the index but does accord with the pagination.the bibliography of the North Briton is necessarily complicated. Like all volumes, this reflects majorly on English political radicalsim of the period and remains an essential source. Issue 197 of December 17 1770 is 'A North Briton Extraordinary 'A Letter to Lord Mansfield.' in effect an attack on Mansfield for which Bingley was, apparently imprisoned, or perhaps was already publishing his journal from prison. His publishing activities, in England at least, seem to have ceased after his release, but he remains a shadowy figure.
