A limited edition of four hundred copies, of which this is numbered one-hundred and fifty-four.Beautifully bound by Zaehnsdorf.Illustrated with a hand-coloured frontispiece, nine hand-coloured plates, and eighteen hand-coloured vignettes, by Randolph Caldecott.Collated, complete.A beautiful topographical work by Alice Comyns Carr looking at Northern Italy, containing a series of biographical sketches on the daily lives of the natives to the area.This was an early work by Carr, published when she was 28 years old. She later became better known as a costume designer, in particular for being the chief designer for actress Ellen Terry for two decades. She designed the striking dress which Terry wore to play Lady Macbeth, which was made with one thousand beetle wings, to create a striking iridescent effect. In a half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper to the boards, bound by Zaehnsdorf. Externally, smart. Very light rubbing to the extremities. Only a couple of faint marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front paste down and to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Fine. Seller Inventory # 878P42
