This lovely lithographed map was engraved, printed, and published in Chicago by George Cram in 1892. It presents a detailed overview of North and South Carolina's railroad network near the end of the Gilded Age, noting numerous depots and stations along each bold, black route. Other toponyms identify a variety of settlements, local landmarks (mills, forts, trading posts, etc.), and geographic features. Topography is shown in hachure, but the rugged terrain of Western North Carolina is certainly understated. What the image fails to show is the rapid and deliberate process of disenfranchising Black populations across both states. In the years following the end of Reconstruction, legislative policies were enacted to minimize voter turnout among former slaves and freemen, despite Black Americans having held several important political positions during the 1870s and 1880s.
