viii, 444 pages; Engraved title, 9 engraved copper plates [several engraved by Peter Maverick] and 19 maps, including double-page. Original green cloth binding quite worn, rubbed through at edges and along front hinge, lacks rear board. Covers are rubbed, some hinge and corners wear. Scattered foxing and toning to paper; last leaf (blank) has some tears. Theodore Dwight was born on March 3, 1796, in Hartford, Connecticut, son of Theodore Dwight (1764 1846) and Abigail Alsop (1765 1846). He graduated from Yale College in 1814. He compiled the travelogues of his uncle, Timothy Dwight IV, previously president of Yale, which he brought to publication in 1821. In 1825, he published this work The Northern Traveller -- only the second tourist guidebook in the United States. A commentator on American society, he wrote a number of works on child rearing and school reform and, in the 1850s and 1860s, passionately advocated for the cause of Garibaldi and the unification of Italy.
