Nach seiner Promotion an der Universität Michigan 1883, studierte er in Europa in Heidelberg und Leipzig und ging dann ans John Hopkins Hospital. Nach Aufenthalten an der Clark Universität u. der Universität Chikago kehrte er 1893 an die Hopkins Medical School zurück. Er revolutionierte das Studium der Anatomie in den USA, als Forscher leistete er signifikante Beiträge zum muskulären Herzsystem und zur Vermehrung des Wissens über die Eingeweide.
