About this Item

Collation: Volume 1 - [iv]-lii, 1-518, [2 & catalog]; Volume 2 - [iv]- xii, 1-542, [2 - catalog] pp. The work is illustrated with a portrait, 71 illustrations and 7 maps (3 are folding; 1 colored). The binding is in very good condition with only minor rubbing and small stain one cover. Internally each volume is quite clean with only minor foxing; free end papers have heavy foxing. Twenty years after Spruce returned from South America in poor health and near penniless, Alfred Russel Wallace collected Spruce's notes and edited them into this work. Without this intervention by Wallace this major and one of the best plant explorations of the Amazon river and Andes would not have been published. Spruce was certainly an eminent botanist who published a number of papers in his remaining years. Verdoorn (Plants and Plant Science in Latin America) provides information and discussion on the many of the locations and findings by Spruce. Spruce followed Bates and Wallace to the Amazon accompanied by Robert King and Herbert Wallace (Wallace's brother) and became one of this team of great explorers and the first to study and collect natural history specimens from the Amazon and other neighboring regions.
