Notes and Extracts in Illustration of a Slight Sketch of Universal History

"Notes And Extracts In Illustration Of A Slight Sketch Of Universal History". This curated volume assembles notes and extracts to illuminate Persian and Greek history and culture, drawing on editors and writers such as Grote, Rawlinson, Curtius, Tozer, Wordsworth, Linton, and Alford. It blends historical prose with dramatic passages and topographical descriptions to trace the arc from late Classical Greece through the rise of Macedon under Philip II and Alexander the Great to the Hellenistic world, with notes on Rome’s later influence. Major threads include the political fates of Athens, Thebes, and Sparta; the conquests of Alexander and the fate of the Persian Empire; sieges at Tyre and Thebes; and the founding of Alexandria and the diffusion of Greek learning. The anthology contrasts civic ideals with imperial realities, and highlights the cultural legacies—coinage, libraries, drama, philosophy—that define Greek civilization across Asia. The result is a panoramic survey of how Greek history and culture shaped a broader ancient world.
