Notes Form a Diary, 1892-1895, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint)

A diary-style snapshot of late Victorian life, this volume gathers Grant Duff’s notes from 1892 to 1895, offering a window into conversations, travels, and cultural events that shaped the era. The entries blend literary talk, politics, and social life with curiously exact details and keen observations.

The book reads as a private record that still speaks to public matters. You’ll encounter reflections on politics, literature, and the arts, along with vivid scenes from clubs, museums, and formal dinners. It’s a portrait of a busy, intellectually engaged mind navigating a rapidly changing world.

- Follow Duff through dinners at Grillion’s and conversations with figures like Morley, Gladstone, and Lord Ashbourne, plus insights from conversations at the Athenaeum and the Geographical Club.
- See travel and diplomacy notes, including memories of the Tsungli Yamen and cross-cultural observations from the era’s international scene.
- Explore literary and scholarly chatter, from discussions of poets and editors to references to the Metaphysical Society and contemporary lectures.
- Read sharp, personable anecdotes and quotes that illuminate politics, society, and the pace of Victorian life.
