Notes of a Half-Pay in Search of Health: Or, Russia, Circassia, and the Crimea in 1839-40

Notes Of A Half-Pay In Search Of Health: Or, Russia, Circassia, And The Crimea In 1839-40 by Captain Jesse. This travelogue chronicles a British Army officer’s 1839–1840 journeys in search of health, spanning from Europe into Russia, the Caucasus, and the Crimea. Blending personal health episodes with acute observations, the work surveys dyspepsia, sea-sickness, and the rigours of long overland travel, while offering a candid portrait of 19th-century Russia: its autocratic governance, social strata, military discipline, and bureaucratic peculiarities. The author visits Odessa, Sevastopol, Yalta, Kertch, Mangoup Kalé, and other locales, interweaving antiquarian interests, provincial life, and reflections on European geopolitics, including Bavarian influence in Greece and the broader war-torn region. A mix of travel narrative, political commentary, and cultural observation, the book presents a vivid, often caustic, snapshot of the era’s travel, society, and imperial power.
