A rare and significant pair of primary intelligence manuals (S.S. 550) detailing the burgeoning science of aerial photographic interpretation during the height of the First World War. The Illustrations Volume (Series A) is a large-format folio featuring a comprehensive "List of Plates" (1–46), including high-contrast aerial views, stereoscopic slides, and sophisticated overlays. These plates provide a fascinating clinical look at the Western Front, identifying German trench systems, "dummy" battery emplacements designed to deceive British artillery, machine gun nests, and the first recorded appearances of tank traps. The manual serves as a testament to the "Golden Age" of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), showcasing the transition from primitive observation to the advanced photogrammetry used to plan the 1917 Spring Offensives. Of particular note are the instructional diagrams on "shadow interpretation" and the rapid "Method of Transferring Detail" from skewed aerial perspectives to accurate cadastral maps. Bound in original publisher’s quarter-khaki cloth over stiff card wrappers. External wear consistent with field or office use; significant rubbing and loss to the spine and edges as is common with these fragile Stationery Service (S.S.) publications. Internally, the plates remain remarkably clean and well-preserved. Occasional contemporary manuscript notations to the upper cover, suggesting authentic period provenance. Historical Note: Marked "For Official Use Only," these manuals were restricted documents. In 1917, the possession of such data by unauthorized persons was a violation of the Defense of the Realm Act. Surviving copies of the "Illustrations" volume are particularly sought after for their oversized, high-fidelity plates which are often removed for individual display. This highly collectable item showing 1st world war ariel photography.…
