Notes on the Progress of New Zealand for Twenty Years, 1864-1884

Notes On The Progress Of New Zealand For Twenty Years, 1864-1884 by Robert Stout. This work provides a comprehensive statistical survey of New Zealand's development over twenty years (1864-1884), tracing population growth, social infrastructure, education, religion, crime, and wealth, as well as economic and industrial progress. Stout organizes analysis under headings such as population, trade and shipping, mineral development, pastoral, agricultural development, and manufactures, and discusses future prospects. It uses census data, birth and death rates, crime statistics, and economic indicators, and includes appendices with diagrams and tables. The narrative situates New Zealand's evolution in the context of gold rushes, immigration, railways, and colonial governance, highlighting the roles of libraries, museums, education reform, and public works, including railways and communications. The work is a reflection of late 19th-century official statistics aimed at assessing progress and planning future growth.
