Item description from seller

"Sales/posting to the USA suspended". Hard cover, 438pp, with accompanying volume of plates which is soft cover, quarto, with xxix full page plates on semi-gloss paper. Both in very good condition with the latter having minor wear to card edges/corners. Originally published in 1920, and under the direction of the Chief of Engineers U.S. Army, this is a collection of lectures prepared by Winslow on the many different topics involved with designing coastal fortifications. Most of the book is devoted to designing gun batteries including chapters on such details as materials, ammunition supply, dryness and ventilation, and blast effect. There are also chapters on fire control, searchlights and submarine mines. Winslow also gives some historical notes about different ideas in the past, and how they were improved. Although it was a project undertaken for the U.S. Army Engineer School it has been included in our catalogue as part of Naval Historyu - representing US attempts to protect itself from sea attack.
