He was the assistant lecturer to Sir William Hamilton and Alexander Campbell Fraser at the University of Glasgow. In 1860 he became the chair of logic, metaphysics and rhetoric at St Andrews and at the University of Glasgow in 1864. These lectures were given whilst he held those positions. He was a conservative thinker who showed little sympathy for the latest developments in philosophical thought.To the rear of this work is the Glasgow University examination questions for the Logic Class.
