Purchas [Henry Hebbert v. John Purchas], had initially been tried before the Dean of the Arches Court of Canterbury, Sir Robert Phillimore, who ruled in Purchas's favor on the ritualistic use of vestments, eastward position, mixed chalice and wafer bread, in 1870. On appeal, for which very full notes on practice and precedents are given here, the Judicial Committee reversed the prior ruling, suspended Purchas as vicar of St. James's, Brighton and directed him to pay all costs. Purchas ignored the suspension and served until his death in the following year. Since publication was delayed, Perry included documents from the Remonstrance Committee and further opinions, p. 444-48, as well as notes on the appeal in Ridsdale v. Clifton, 1877, p. 449-46, with index, p. [457]-72. Ritualists were no longer considered within the letter of the law but as lawbreakers. A consequence of this case was the Public Worship Regulation Act of 1874 `to put down ritualism', drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Archibald Campbell Tait, and made more severe in Parliament by Lord Shaftesbury. Under its provisions four priests were imprisoned between 1877-82. Binding is Hardcover.
