Far more than a combat memoir, Nothing As It Seems is a brutally honest, deeply human story about war, trauma, family, grief, grace, and the long journey home.
As a U.S. Army infantry officer, Dennis Call led soldiers through some of the most violent battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. But the hardest battles were not always fought overseas. They followed him home—in the form of anger, guilt, shame, depression, fractured relationships, and the quiet isolation that so often accompanies trauma. The violence of war may have been the catalyst, but the wounds ran deeper and touched every part of his life: his marriage, his family, his faith, his sense of identity, and ultimately his understanding of what it means to heal.
Through vivid storytelling and unpretentious confession, Dennis pulls back the curtain on the realities that military members, veterans, and trauma survivors often carry in silence. He writes candidly about combat, loss, moral injury, brotherhood, and the unseen costs of survival. No politics and no hero worship—only the unvarnished truth of a man struggling to make sense of his experiences while searching for a way forward.
Yet Nothing As It Seems is not merely a story about war. It is a story about what comes after. About the difficult journey home. Back from the dust and violence of war, where danger sharpens every response and survival becomes instinct, bedtime stories, spilled juice, lullabies, the ordinary rhythms of family life can feel strangely distant—like memories from someone else’s life. It is about the spouses, children, siblings, friends, mentors, and communities who walk beside those carrying invisible wounds. It is about the distance trauma creates between people who love one another and the courage required to bridge that distance with honesty, compassion, and grace. It is about learning that healing rarely happens in isolation and that no one was meant to carry life's burdens alone.
For veterans and trauma survivors, this memoir offers the reassurance that they are not alone in their struggle. For military families, it provides an unflinching and deeply personal window into the battles that often continue long after the shooting stops. For supportive readers seeking to understand the hidden burdens carried by those they love, it offers something even more valuable than answers: the opportunity to listen, to remain present, and to share the weight.
At its heart, Nothing As It Seems is a story of redemption. It is the journey from internal war toward internal peace, from silence toward confession, from isolation toward community, and from despair toward hope. It is a reminder that healing is possible, that grace is real, and that even the deepest wounds can begin to mend when people have the courage to tell the truth and the willingness to carry pain together.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
