Discusses the problem of structural-functional organization of eukaryotic cell nuclei with special emphasis on the genome spatial organization and functioning. The opening chapters describe the nuclear matrix and the fate of its components in the course of mitosis. In the next eight chapters the organization of chromosomal DNA into large loops and the relation of this organization to the partitioning of the genome into functional units are discussed. The last two chapters attempt to synthesize present knowledge about the domain organization of the genome and about functional compartmentalization of eukaryotic cell nuclei.
