A bicycle could identify a man. It could not identify a shooter.
On July 5, 1919, twenty-one-year-old Annie Bella Wright set out on an ordinary bicycle journey through rural Leicestershire. Later that evening, she was found near Little Stretton with her bicycle nearby. What first appeared to be a cycling accident became a fatal-shooting investigation—and the beginning of the case remembered as the Green Bicycle Case.
Months later, part of a dismantled green bicycle was recovered from a Leicester waterway. Identifying marks had reportedly been damaged, but one surviving number gave investigators a path back to its owner: Ronald Vivian Light. Light eventually acknowledged that he had accompanied Bella for part of her journey. Evidence also connected him to the concealment of the bicycle and to firearm-related property. Those facts made him the central accused person in a murder prosecution, but they did not answer the decisive question of who fired the shot.
One Number Left follows the investigation from Bella’s final documented movements to the recovery of the bicycle, the surviving identifier, the witness identifications, the missing revolver, and the circumstantial case presented at Leicester Castle. It examines what the Crown could argue from concealment, changing accounts, witness testimony, and firearm-related evidence—and what the defense could challenge about chronology, identification, reconstruction, motive, and the absence of the weapon itself.
Ronald Light was acquitted. That verdict governs how this book treats him. He is not presented as having caused Bella Wright’s death, and suspicion is not converted into certainty after the fact. The book instead asks what the evidence could establish, what remained disputed, and why a case capable of producing a name, a trial, and a verdict still failed to produce a settled account of the shooting.
The investigation also raises a deeper evidentiary problem. A bicycle could be traced through an industrial number. A missing revolver could not be subjected to an individual ballistic comparison. A disturbed scene could not later yield every original relationship with confidence. Witness memories could be examined, but they could not place anyone at the fatal instant with the certainty the prosecution needed. Even later material described as a post-acquittal confession is treated according to its unresolved provenance and reliability rather than used as a convenient solution.
At the center of the book is Bella herself. The surviving record preserves more detail about the bicycle, the accused man, and the celebrated trial than about the young woman whose death created the case. Rather than inventing private thoughts, relationships, or motives to fill those gaps, the narrative keeps her documented life in view alongside the evidence that came to overshadow it.
Written as restrained historical true crime and narrative nonfiction, One Number Left moves through public records, documented reporting, legal history, competing reconstructions, and the limits of what can responsibly be claimed. It is an investigation of an unresolved British case, but also of the difference between suspicion and proof, legal acquittal and historical uncertainty, and evidence that can point without finally answering.
For readers drawn to historical true crime, unresolved cases, courtroom evidence, and British crime history, this book follows the record as far as it can go—and stops where the evidence stops.
