About this Item

First Edition. xii, 418 pp; figs. Original cloth. Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket. Addison-Wesley Series in Mathematics. On p. 418, there is the sequence 'ABCDE9876543' that one would normally find on the copyright page; this signifies a first printing ('A' for first, '3' for the 3 in 1963, when the book must have gone to press though it has the date 1964 on the title page). '[N]ot just another book on the real number system' (J. B. Roberts, review for The American Mathematical Monthly, Vol. 72, No. 2, Feb., 1965, p. 219). For the 'Quote of the Month' at the 37th Buffalo Logic Colloquium, 2006-07, a line from Feferman's book on studying logic was chosen: 'Logical thinking in mathematics can be learned only by observation and experience. In fact, the ability to reason correctly and to understand correct reasoning is itself a prerequisite to the study of formal logic.'. Bookseller Inventory # 16719
