About this Item

Adams, a Harvard-educated CIA analyst who died suddenly of a heart attack in 1988, discovered that US military and civilian intelligence analysts were playing with the numbers on Viet Cong battle casualties to produce a much more optimistic conclusion than was warranted. In other words, the CIA was "cooking the books" and the false conclusions were passed up the line where senior political figures at the highest leves were parties to the information they knew was misleading. Adams safeguarded a trove of documents in the woods, resigned from the CIA (after earlier being chosen as a model CIA analyst for his work!) and after a long ordeal against the political and intelligence bureaucracy and won his case. The story of his struggle makes fascinating and essential reading, and it's still relevant because foreign policy is still being tailored to domestic political and personal considerations. Adams died before this book could be finished but the essence is there, and Adams was a lucid and well-organized writer. Introduction by Col. David Hackworth. Bookseller Inventory # 70004
