It's All About the Numbers

Michael Jordan didn't choose #23 because it was iconic - he made it iconic. Long before it became the most recognizable number in sports, it was simply a mathematical tribute to his older brother Larry, whose own number was 45. Jordan aimed to be "half as good," rounded up, and in doing so created a number that would define a generation.

It's All About the Numbers explores the stories, psychology, and cultural meaning behind the jersey numbers athletes choose - and the numbers fans obsess over. From childhood heroes to family ties, from superstition to branding, from quiet personal decisions to global symbols, numbers in sports carry far more weight than most people realize.

Through vivid storytelling and deep research, Rob Lorton uncovers why certain numbers become legendary, why some athletes cling to the same digit their entire career, and why fans form emotional attachments to the numbers stitched on their heroes' backs. Along the way, the book reveals how numbers shape identity, memory, and legacy across every major sport.

Whether you're a lifelong fan, a student of sports culture, or simply someone who loves the hidden stories behind the game, It's All About the Numbers shows how something as simple as a number can carry history, personality, and power.
