The Numismatic Journal

The Numismatic Journal by John Yonge Akerman. The Numismatic Journal is a 1836–1837 volume edited by Akerman that collects early nineteenth-century numismatic scholarship. This inaugural issue presents a miscellany of long and short papers on coins, medals, and token types from antiquity to the medieval era. Major articles include Unpublished Coins of Nicaea in Bithynia; Notices of the Most Remarkable Coins of the Roman Consular Series; Saxon Skeatta of Wildfrid; Explanation of NVBIS CONS on Romulus, Son of Maxentius; Roman Coins by M. Pinder; Unpublished Half-Groat of Charles I; Remarks on a Penny of Henry III; The Minter Cabinet; and critical examinations of the Jewish shekel and the money called Lucullia. The issue blends textual commentary, catalog annotations, and philological insights with occasional editorial notes, letters, and miscellanies. It provides a valuable snapshot of early numismatic scholarship and the growing taste for periodical dissemination of coin studies.
