In good condition. Early 19th century binding possibly bound for the Imperial Russian Library. Spine worn with dryness along joints and extremes. Gilt work remains intact on spine. Marbled boards are worn and soiled. Appears leather on corners has been removed. Bookplates of two important bibliophiles on front paste down (more information below in description) Text block typically toned, in nice condition overall for age. Light foxing. Free of marginalia. Old hand ownership names on title (late 1500 s or early 1600 s hand) Binding remains tight and intact. Please see photos. Armorial bookplate of Dmitry Buturlin, Russian Empire General and military historian from a noble family of Ratshid stock. He was admitted into the Governing Senate in May 1833 and into the State Council of Imperial Russia in December 1840. He took part in many campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars as aide-de-camp to Prince Pytor Mikhailovich Volkonsky and Alexander I of Russia. In 1823 he went to France to help suppress the Spanish Revolution of 1820 and distinguished himself at the Battle of Trocadero. He was the Librarian of the Imperial Russian Library, and one of the most outstanding book collectors of 19th century Russia. Bookplate of Louis Thompson Rowe (1855-1927) a member of the Bibliographical Society and noted book collector, with many early printed editions.
