About the Author
Paul Thomas Clements, PhD, RN
Paul Thomas Clements is an Associate Clinical Professor. A psychiatric / forensic specialist, he is additionally a Certified Gang Specialist and Certified in Danger Assessment. His clinical experience includes serving as Assistant Director/Bereavement Therapist at the Homicide Bereavement Center at the Office of the Medical Examiner in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he was appointed as the Director of Operations for the City of Philadelphia Department of Public Health. He is an experienced therapist, forensic consultant, and critical incident/trauma response specialist with over 20 years experience in management/administration and crisis intervention. He was involved in the television and printed news media, as well as interviewed on National Public Radio (NPR), related to discussions regarding the offender, victims and survivors of the Virginia Tech shootings. Paul Clements has numerous publications and conference presentations regarding stress, trauma, violence and aggression, coping after violent death and exposure to interpersonal violence and crime. He is an Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse (APRN, BC) with national board certification as a Specialist in Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health Nursing. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychiatric Forensic Nursing from The University of Pennsylvania.
Ann W. Burgess, DNSc, APRN, BC, FAAN
Ann Burgess is an internationally recognized pioneer in the assessment and treatment of victims of trauma and abuse. She has received several honors for her work including the Sigma Theta Tau International Audrey Hepburn Award, the American Nurses Association Hildegard Peplau Award, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Episteme Laureate Award. Her research with victims began when she co-founded one of the first hospital-based crisis counseling programs at Boston City Hospital with Boston College sociologist, Lynda Lytle Holmstrom. Since then, she has worked with the FBI Academy special agents to study serial offenders and the links between child abuse, juvenile delinquency, and subsequent perpetration. Ann Burgess has also studied young abuse victims and the impact of trauma on their physical and psychological development, their families, and communities. Her recent research includes studies in elder abuse in nursing homes, cyberstalking, and Internet sex crimes. She is currently a professor at the Boston College William F. Connell School of Nursing and teaches courses in victimology, forensic science, forensic mental health, case studies in forensics, and forensic science labs.
Theresa M. Fay-Hillier, MSN, PMHCNS-BC
Theresa Fay-Hillier is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the College of Nursing and Health Professions. She received her Master's Degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Holy Family University. She is currently enrolled in the DrPH program in the School of Public Health Community Health and Prevention at Drexel University. She is a board certified Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and has a certification in using the Danger Assessment Tool. Ms. Fay-Hillier has an interest in working with the chronically mentally ill as well as people who are victims of abuse. Her experience in her areas of interest have been numerous and in a variety of community settings. She was a co-leader of a homicide bereavement group for families at the Philadelphia City Morgue. Ms. Fay-Hillier was also a co-owner of a nurse owned business providing critical incident stress debriefing services to employees who worked in both health care agencies and general business facilities.
