The Nursing Professional Development: Scope and Standards of Practice is a foundational document that describes the who, what, when, where, how and why of NPD practice. It is a living document that is updated periodically to reflect the changing nature of NPD practice. The current edition was published in 2022. The scope of NPD practice is defined as "the application of theory and evidence-based practice to the design, implementation, and evaluation of learning experiences that support the professional development of nurses." The standards of NPD practice are as follows: Standard 1: NPD practitioners use knowledge of the nursing profession, the healthcare system, and adult learning theory to design and implement learning experiences that meet the needs of nurses.
