Accordion-folding album, very good, 10 hand-painted scenes on silk in delicate watercolors, full text in Chinese & English, 14.5 x 20.5 cm.,brown silk covers with Chinese title slip on the front. R A R E A charming work, made for distribution to foreign visitors to China. Done in the Chinese fashion, beginning right to left. Covers the Confucian devotions, and festivals to give honor to ancestors, offering sacrifices to the Gods and establishing general holidays for public entertainment. This work covers the ten main festivals: New Year Greetings on Yuan Tan. The Lantern Show on Shang Yuan. Cleansing Tombs on Ching Min or Tombs Festival Day. Dragon-boat Racing on Tuan Yang. Meditation of Kinsmen on Chung Yuan. Enjoying the Moon light at mid-Autumn festival. Ascending a height on Double-Nine. Thanksgiving for Good Harvests. Offering to God of the Kitchen Range for Blessing. Thanks to Heaven on New Year's Eve. * Each of the ten festivals are portrayed in a delicate hand-painted illustration of festivals. Delicately painted in full color, on rough silk, with traditional Chinese silk mounting style, with Chinese & English text on the opposite side. A fine example of the Chinese illustrated book, with silk mountings on the borders of the paintings. Nicely done, with two edge gilt, as usual, a bit of warping to covers. * THE BINDING: This title comes in two variant bindings: one is wood covers with the Chinese character "FU" carved and stained green.
