OPERATION BLUEBIRD: The CIA’s First Mind-Control Program: The Secret Birth of MK-ULTRA and The War for the Human Mind. How America’s darkest psychological program started (Secret Files)

The CIA wanted absolute control over the human mind. Long before MK-ULTRA, they built the prototype.

In August 1950, a cryptic, uncorroborated cable from Lisbon landed on the desk of the Director of Central Intelligence. It spoke of a man on a Soviet merchant ship who moved like a machine—turned off and turned on again. Panic rippled through the top tiers of American intelligence: Had the Soviets cracked the code to human mind control?

Driven by Cold War hysteria, the CIA launched Operation Bluebird—its first official, systematic program designed to master brainwashing, induce amnesia, and command absolute obedience.

For decades, Bluebird was dismissed as a minor footnote, buried beneath the notorious shadow of MK-ULTRA. Until now.

Drawing on declassified files, court records, congressional testimony, and forgotten archival leaks, author Michael I. Bryce exposes the dark, self-contained history of the blueprint that started it all.

Inside this harrowing historical investigation, you will discover:

• The Lisbon Telegram: The single, unverified rumor that triggered a multi-million-dollar psychological arms race.

• The Architect: How Morse Allen built a shadowy empire of soundproofed isolation chambers, experimental drug labs, and unethical human testing.

• The Shopping List: The terrifying catalog of 40+ mind-altering compounds, hypnosis protocols, sensory deprivation, and targeted electroshock.

• The Low-Visibility Victims: The tragic true stories of psychiatric patients, soldiers, prisoners, and immigrants injected with experimental agents without consent.

• Overseas Black Sites: The hidden history of Camp King in Germany and the brutal, unauthorized field trials conducted on Soviet defectors.

• The Legacy of Terror: The direct line connecting the interrogation techniques pioneered under Bluebird to post-9/11 "enhanced interrogation."

They ordered the documents burned. They tried to erase the victims. They failed.
