Item description from seller

An original 1819 volume and NOT printed new when ordered by customer. 1819 was a momentous year in the history of English criminal law as it witnessed the first major parliamentary inquiry designed to rid the statute book of the 'Bloody Code' of 18th century capital statutes, including both forgery laws and the 'Black Act' of 1723 that prescribed the death penalty for trivial offences, such breaking small saplings, laws which benefited the rich landowners. This volume is listed as poor because boards and spine missing, with foxing and tanning and minor creasing. Sections from L to Z commencing with 'Letters of Marque', 'Libels', to 'Woods' (which recites the Black Act provisions) and 'Wool'. 689 pages plus 20 pages preface and table of statutes. So the contents are significant for criminal and legal historians, showing statutes immediately before the 1819 select committee on the criminal laws. About 1 kg. weight so extra overseas postage.
