Light brown backed grey board covers appear to be original, boards rubbed at corners and outer edges, dark stain line to back top outer edge, but otherwise quite clean, sp. rubbed at ends and has 1 cm. cloth split lower fr. joint, label rubbed but legible despite some loss down central strip. xv+319, pp.281 onwards unopened; 1856 dated ink sig, fr. free end-paper (Mary Ward), minor tearing/ scuffing to upper outer margins through to p.xiv, thin splits to paper on end gutters but these otherwise firm, no obvious browning and otherwise clean, tight & unmarked; A reprint of the 1801 edition from which Stewart omitted Part III 'Of Man Considered as a Member of a Political Body', contents of which are in an Appendix from p.315 to end. This, he explains in Preface, was due to his having by then separately published his 'Course of Lectures on Political Economy'.
