The Obelisk

In the Beginning, there was nothing. Then, some short time after that, after the concept of time asserted itself and established a causal relationship with reality, there existed an Obelisk. It doesn't matter how it got there, or who made it. What matters is that it exists, and upon that existence, every event to ever occur, from the smallest blade of grass photosynthesizing to the greatest marvels and follies of human history is written upon it.

Mary, the daughter of religious fundamentalists heads back to Meade County, Kentucky where her brother once lived to handle his estate after his suicide. Peter returned to his home to attend the funeral of his estranged son. DeMarkus returned home to find both of his parents dead in an incident of police brutality. Joshua lay in his hospital bed, clinging to life after a car accident. Four events, irrelevant to the grand scheme and making little difference to the overarching majority of people.

The Obelisk examines the concept of free will, apocalyptic literature, and the relation between music and metaphysics.
