Saltzman (English, Missouri Southern State Coll.), the author of six studies on contemporary American fiction, here eschews literary criticism in favor of essays that are personal and wide-ranging in subject matter. He writes about growing up in Chicago, his likes and dislikes, and incidents that have happened to him and to those close to him. The 25 pieces are occasionally satirical, often pointed about manners and mores in contemporary America, and at times wistful in the contrast between life now as opposed to the past. The best essays are those that poignantly deal with family members, such as his brain-damaged daughter and his late father, with whom he had a very close relationship. Saltzman uses literary references (to Beckett, Eliot, and many modern poets and novelists) as well as nonliterary citations to such events as the first moon landing to add texture and haunting echoes to the themes of his essays. This winner of the Mid-List Press First Series Award for Creative Nonfiction is recommended for larger public and academic libraries. Morris Hounion, New York City Technical Coll. Lib., Brooklyn
