Obligate Synchrony

In a sealed laboratory, a simple directive was given: Observe.

Experiment 717-Δ was designed to track the long-term evolution of two interdependent species. The rules were absolute: no intervention, no guidance. Let the system reveal its own truths.

What remains is a fragmented, declassified dossier, a triptych of conflicting voices.

• The Archivist records data with cold precision.
• The Director interprets survival through the ruthless calculus of stability.
• The Ethicist logs the quiet cost of it all.

Across the records, patterns surface and disappear. Metrics shift. Thresholds are crossed. Some changes are cataloged carefully. Others are absorbed into summary tables or removed from view altogether. The focus remains on the system until the act of observation itself begins to intrude.

Obligate Synchrony is a work of literary speculative fiction. Meaning emerges through accumulation, omission, and contradiction.

For readers drawn to experimental form, ecological speculation, and philosophical science fiction, this novel examines the limits of neutrality, the ethics of watching, and the quiet consequences embedded in institutional language.

Matthew Dyer writes stories that linger in the quiet spaces between decisions, between people, between what is said and what is felt. His work spans literary fiction, speculative science fiction, and imaginative worlds, but is united by a shared fascination with perception, memory, and the small moments that quietly shape who we become. He is drawn to characters navigating change without spectacle. Whether writing about a small-town bookshop, an experimental archive, or a fractured future, his stories favor atmosphere, emotional restraint, and the weight of ordinary choices.Matthew lives in Texas with his family and works across creative, technical, and editorial disciplines. When he isn't writing, he's usually revising, designing, or thinking about how stories hold what we leave behind.
