About this Item

Quarter-morocco on marbled boards; occasional interior spotting, lower blank fore-edge sporadically browned, otherwise an excellent copy. First edition. In this famous monograph, Remak describes his findings on the histological structure of the nervous system; demonstrates that axons of nerves are continuous with cells in the spinal cord; and reveals the sympathetic ganglion as the real center of the organic, or autonomic, nervous system. This work also contains his discovery that the sympathetic fibers ("Remak's fibers") are gray because they are non-myelinated.Remak (1815-65) was the foremost pioneer in the study of the structure of the nervous system. As early as 1842 he opposed the notion that cells can be generated from a more or less homogeneous base substance. The publication of this paper earned for Remak his degree in medicine from the University of Berlin. Bookseller Inventory # 13748
