By a Foreigner.accompanied by a preface by M. Faraday", pp 334-358. [The "foreigner" here is Garett Moll, from the Netherlands, a polymathic figure of the early 19th c.] This is a discussion of a paper relating to Babbage on this topic in the previous volume of the EJS, all this based on Babbage's short book "Reflections on the decline of science in England, and on some of its causes" (1830). Babbage was pretty upset with the state of support for science in Great Britain he made a very strong case for his position many thinking it was too strong--taking a particular aim at the Royal Society, saying that, in general, the scientific institutions of England were inferior to most of the rest of the scientific world. Babbage provides a lot of data and more polemic for his position. I'm also selling an earlier paper relating to this Babbage work elsewhere on ABE [offered by me under "Babbage" for this same journal vol IV 1830]. [++] Also in this volume are many other papers of interest, including: BREWSTER, David. "On a New Analysis of Solar Light, indicating three Primary Colours, forming Coincidental Spectra of equal length" pp 197-206. Leonard EULER, "On the Perfection of Microscopes", pp 233-237.
