In the Preface, Pott urges attention to details of the disease so that cases thought to be incurable are only so because of surgeons' mismanagement. "the operative part of surgery is far from being the whole of it". Comments on "surgical dexterity" .quickness as compared to speed of a jockey. Protection of the patient is a more important quality in a surgeon than speed. "Parcivall Pott (1714-1788) "correctly explained the physiology of the lachrymal apparatus. He described three varieties of lachrymal obstruction: (1) simple dilatation of the sacculus and obstruction of the nasal duct, without inflammation; (2) inflammation, abscess or ulceration of the same parts with purulent discharge; and (3) obliteration of the natural duct, attended sometimes with caries of the bone."
