Observations on the Enemies of the Coffee Tree in Ceylon

Observations On The Enemies Of The Coffee Tree In Ceylon by John Nietner. This work offers a comprehensive survey of the natural history of pests that threaten the Coffee tree in Ceylon, presented as a continuation of earlier notices of noxious insects. Nietner catalogs 27 enemies across Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Orthoptera, Coleoptera, and mammals, detailing life cycles, host plants, and the extent of damage to estates in the hill country. The most pervasive pests—the white mealybug Pseudococcus Adonidum and the brown and black Lecanium species—are described in life stages, with notes on their ecological relationships and the honeydew and fungal infections they produce, notably Syncladium Nietneri. He also notes myriad parasites (Scutellista cyanea, Encyrtus Nietneri, Chartocerus musciformis, Cirrhospilus coccivorus, Chilocorus circumdatus, Marietta leopardina) that keep populations in check. Beyond descriptive taxonomy, the author discusses the economics of coffee cultivation in Sri Lanka, including estate statistics (about 420 estates, 90,000 acres, 600,000 cwt of clean coffee) and the role of natural predators. He reflects on potential control measures and the indeterminacy of pest spread, emphasizing the value of natural enemies.
