Observations By F.J. Lamb On The Papers Lately Submitted To Parliament Upon The Subject Of The Affairs Of Portugal by Frederick James Lamb. This 1830 publication provides a critical examination of British diplomacy during the Portuguese constitutional crisis following the accession of Pedro and the Regency. Lamb analyzes parliamentary papers and dispatches from key figures such as Sir Charles Stuart and Mr. Canning, arguing that Britain actively influenced the adoption of Portugal’s Charter and subsequently defended an interventionist position while seeking to distance itself from responsibility. The text traces how the Charter was conveyed to Lisbon, the diplomatic pressure on the Regency, and the ambassadorial role in supporting or hindering reform, including the presence of British troops in Lisbon and financial backing. It contends that Britain’s pursuit of constitutional models across Europe was pursued with uneven principles and at times to the detriment of Portuguese constitutionalists, while underscoring the sufferings of those displaced. It concludes by warning that England’s policy risked eroding credibility and provoking European conflict, and it calls for accountability in Parliament.
