About this title

Synopsis

Observations And Inquiries Relating To Various Parts Of Ancient History: Containing Dissertations On The Wind Euroclydon, And On The Island Melite, Together With An Account Of Egypt In Its Most Early State, And Of The Shepherd Kings by Jacob Bryant offers a rigorous, philological survey of ancient chronology and geographic distribution across the Mediterranean and Nile regions. The work aggregates three major dissertations (on the Wind Euroclydon; on the Island Melite; and Observations upon the Ancient History of Egypt), introduced by a preface and extended methodological reflections. Bryant contends that late antique and medieval canons frequently preserve corrupted dynastic lists and place-names, and he foregrounds a data-driven critique to reconstruct more plausible histories. He argues for disentangling conflated dynasties, reinterpreting Phoenician and Egyptian geography, and aligning biblical geography with Greco-Roman historiography. The narrative treats the Shepherd Kings and Goshen as a twofold tradition within Egypt, identifies Zoan with Tanis rather than Sais, and cautions against accepting uncertain accounts of winds, islands, and places without solid philological support. The three dissertations collectively aim to revise early Near Eastern and Egyptian history through careful textual and geographic analysis.
