Item description from seller

The Third Edition. - London : Printed for L. Hawes, W. Clarke, and R. Collins, 1773, 8°, (4), 276 pp., 3 Kupferstichtafeln, Ledereinband d.Zt.; Rücken erneuert, ExLibris von Eugene S. Flamm; feines Expl. The third Edition is the second print of the revised and enlarged second edition of Pott's 'Observations on the nature and consequences of wounds and contusions of the head '(1760), in which Pott had first described the characteristic puffy tumor ("Pott's puff tumor") differentiating extradural hematoma from abscess, and had noted the various effect of extradural and subdural hemorrhages." Norman 1735 (1st. print of the second Ed. 1768). "This book, which showed Pott's extensive knowledge of surgical literature, systematized the treatment of head injuries. It shows what a variety of injuries of the head could be sustained even before the advent of the motor-car. Includes the first description of "Pott's puffy tumor". Pott was bom in Threadneedle Street, where the Bank of England now stands; he succeeded Cheselden as the greatest surgeon of his day. The book was altered and re-published under a different title in 1768." GN (1st.Ed. 1760) "I have previously suggested that Percivall Pott (1713-1788), the English surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital from 1736 until 1787, may be considered a central figure in the transition of neurosurgery from a part of general surgery to a specialized discipline in its own right." Flamm, E.S.: Percivall Pott : an 18th century neurosurgeon. J. Neurosurger. 76 (1992): 319-326 Percivall Pott (1714-1788) was an English surgeon, also one of the founders of orthopaedics, and the first scientist to demonstrate that a cancer may be caused by an environmental carcinogen.
