Observations On Divers Passages Of Scripture. Placing Many Of Them In A Light Altogether New. And More Amply Illustrating The Rest Than Has Been Yet Done, By Means Of Circumstances Incidentally Mentioned In Books Of Voyages And Travels Into The East: In Two Volumes by Thomas Harmer. This scholarly work aims to illuminate biblical passages by drawing cultural and natural-context parallels from travels and natural history in the East, with a focus on the Holy Land. Harmer compiles observations from Shaw, Rauwolf, Sandys, Olearius, Thevenot, Chardin, Maundrell, Norden, Pococke, and others, arguing for a method that supplements biblical exegesis with Eastward customs and phenomena. The excerpt presents front matter and a long section on weather in the Holy Land, living in tents, and pastoral economy, including Observations I–XXII on climate and agricultural cycles, and Observations I–III on Bedouin life. It emphasizes cross-referencing travel sources, cautious chronology, and the idea that geography and climate influence scriptural interpretation. Part 1 of a four-part work, the volume blends travel narrative with philology and theology to reframe biblical readings.
