Observations on the System of War of the Allies in the Spanish Peninsular, Extr. from a Letter Volume 8

Observations On The System Of War Of The Allies In The Spanish Peninsular, Extr. From A Letter presents a historical political treatise extracted from a letter dated 1811. It discusses the state of the Peninsular War at the close of the fourth year of resistance to Napoleonic ambitions, evaluating how the allied forces—Britain and its Spanish and Portuguese partners—have conducted operations. The author argues that the current strategy, centered on defending Torres Vedras and sustaining a large land army, is insufficient and misaligned with maritime power. A central proposal advocates a maritime expeditionary army, potentially 20,000 strong, operating from the sea to strike on various points around the peninsula, coordinating with Spanish guerrillas, and supporting insurgent efforts to weaken the French. The text also contemplates the political implications of sustaining aid to Spain, emphasizes the need for flexible, sea-enabled warfare, and envisions a decisive conversion of strategy that would hasten liberation while preserving allied interests across the Iberian Peninsula.
