Obsessive-compulsive disorders are characterized by the urge to repeatedly perform inappropriate acts, or to dwell on intrusive or distressing thoughts. A mild form of the disorder is relatively common, and might involve thorough checking rituals, or overemphasis on cleanliness. A severe form, however, may take over the sufferer's life to the extent that much of their time and energy is given to resisting repugnant thoughts, or repeating tasks such as hand-washing.
