Synopsis

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was one of the first universities to be given, specifically, the task of developing courses for Ocean Engineering. This book evolved from a course initially given in 1967 as a part of the newly established graduate Ocean Engineering curriculum at M.I.T.

Though intended to be introductory, Ocean Engineering Structures caters to the varied backgrounds of a wide range of engineering and science graduates concerned with structural analysis and design applicable to oceanic frontiers.

The text affords a concentration of material in all aspects and also provides an outline of the material in a factual-narrative form, readily assimilated for comprehension and application.

Each headed section of the text (see Contents, which follows) represents the subject material given in one 60-minute session (with some exceptions) plus a minimal amount of associated, pre-understood launching of the discussion. Surface vehicles, whether of the positive displacement (including catamarans), hydrofoil, hydroplane, or air-cushion type, have been omitted on the grounds of their already having been included and thoroughly investigated as a part of other well-established naval architecture subjects. The same reasoning applies to the omission of any more than introductory, interface coverage of space frame analysis, soil mechanics, and materials. The roles of the strength and mass density properties of materials in tradeoff analyses are covered, however, especially for their importance in submarine pressure hull design in the deep ocean environment.
