Grade 2-4 Another straightforward offering from this dependable and prolific author. Olney divides his book into three sections: passenger giants (ocean-liners); fighting giants (destroyers, battleships, submarines and such); and working giants (tugboats, oil rigs, etc.). The text, succinct yet clear, provides infomation readily understandable to young readers. For example, the sheer size of the Queen Elizabeth II is imaginatively conveyed by ". . .the ice cream stocked for one transatlantic crossing would make 24,000 single-dip cones." Black-and-white photographs, culled from various sources, are of uneven quality but are for the most part helpful and interesting.
