The Odd Fellows' Amulet: Or, the Principles of Odd Fellowship Defined . With an Address

The Odd Fellows' Amulet: Or, The Principles Of Odd Fellowship Defined; The Objections To The Order Answered; And Its Advantages Maintained by Rev. D. W. Bristol presents a defense of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. This 1848 tract argues that Odd Fellowship is a benevolent, Bible-grounded association designed to promote mutual improvement, relief of distress, and social harmony. It describes lodge life as a school for deliberation, leadership, and civility, and asserts that secrecy guards the innocent rather than conceals wrongdoing. The work systematically addresses objections—political aims, unlawful oaths, exclusivity of the poor, secrecy, the role of women, church influence, and alleged Freemasonry ties—rooted in a Biblical, moral justification for its practices. It catalogs advantages for members and families, including sickness relief, widow and orphan support, and aid for travelers, concluding with a public appeal to study and embrace the order’s benevolent aims.
