This review of the steps of the gradual development of the Boston Police Department, is, of necessity, not so complete as might be desired. In such a work there is always lack of data felt to be necessary for the fullest expression of the facts it is desired to present. The incompleteness of early records, the reluctance some officials aiways feel to having their own share in public events even fairly stated, while c.hers may have obtained undue prominence, and kindred reasons all combine to make such a volume lack the perfectness its designers intended and the public interest requires. But herein are contained the more essential facts of the origin, development and growth of the Department, so far as they-could be found in the records available. Their presentation in this form may be the means of bring ing together, at a later date, an even greater wealth of fact and detail, by which this history may be enlarged, corrected and improved.

The publisher is under deep obligation to the officers and members of the Department for the very cordial and effective co-operation he has received at their hands in the preparation of this work, and without which such a publication would have been impossible. ~now that it is completed, and its value appreciated, such kind assistance should be given all credit. In this volume each member of The Force herein represented, will always have a memorial of the share he has borne in this important branch of the public service. And it is an object lesson in itself of the Democratic principles on which our government rests, just to read the list of places of birth of these officials and see how they have come from the four quarters of the earth, literally, to guard the public interest as members of the Boston Police Department. With very few exceptions, all the members of that Department are here represented, and those exceptions have all been for good and sufficient reasons; and even some of those not here represented were among the most cordial approvers of the plan and merit of the work. Such a service must be, from its very nature, purely voluntary, and for that reason the publisher feels more earnest in expressing his obligation for assistance rendered, especially from Superintendent William H. 'pierce, and Mr. Thomas Ryan, Chief Clerk of the Department.
