Brookfield Zoo (also known as the Chicago Zoological Park) officially opened on June 30, 1934, on land originally donated to the Cook County Forest Preserve in 1919. In 1920, a group of prominent Chicagoans formed the Chicago Zoological Society, which still manages the zoo to this day. This map shows the zoo grounds in an eye-catching Art Deco style, which first appeared as a fold-out in guidebooks issued from the late 1930s. This particular example was published in 1942, while the society was under the direction of President John T. McCutcheon. The image uses soft pastel colors and striking geometric designs to highlight the numerous attractions available to visitors. Included as a fold-out to a 108-page guidebook to the zoo, which includes color illustrations, a directional map, and descriptions of each exhibit. Printed in Chicago by the Neely Printing Company and published by the Chicago Zoological Park in 1942. Sheet Width (in) 19 Sheet Height (in) 14.5 Condition Description 108 pp. guidebook with paper covers and stapled binding. Light spotting throughout the contents, but overall quite good. Includes a folding map with light creasing and a bit of toning, but near fine overall. Seller Inventory # C009170
