The decades from 1968 until the turn of the 21st century are often called the "Modern Classic Age of Sail" with Dennis Connor, Warren Brown, Ted Turner, Ted Hood, Chay Blyth, Carlton Mitchell, Sir Peter Blake, Tristan Jones, Bernard Moitessier and the hundreds of other colorful icons of the sailing world providing the fertile ground for an exploration of true sailors and the unforgiving sea. The author has sailed with, among, and against many of these colorful pioneers of "mostly amateur" ocean racing.
Enclosed is a collection of insights and first-hand observations intended for the armchair sailor in all of us. These distilled celebrations of life at sea are best enjoyed read aloud in some quiet little anchorage illuminated by an oil lamp, bobbing gently to your own hook. Yet, they work their spell anywhere, anytime.
R. J. Rubadeau has had the rare privilege to have spent the last half century plus doing the very thing that feeds his soul and proves to be a powerful muse. A licensed captain, he has logged well over two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand blue water miles in boats ranging from Olympic class skiffs to maxi-ocean racers. His own yacht, Dog Star, an eighty-eight year old wooden ketch, still practices the ancient art of seasonal summer voyaging with a growing family in the vessel's home waters off the New England coast and the Bay of Fundy.
An award winning poet, author, novelist, professional staff writer, and political consultant, with a long publication resume of fiction, poetry and non-fiction, R. J. Rubadeau was the 2004 recipient of the Mark Fischer Literary Prize for poetry. Contained in this volume are poems gathered from logbooks and journals spanning over five decades of sailing and travel experiences fraught with the expected challenges and vagaries of worldwide cultures, high stakes ocean racing, and the simpler magic of a long life at sea in sailing boats that are also home and hearth.
