Old Hall, New Hall by Michael Innes, penguin,1956

This charming little pocket-sized book is a well-loved classic by M.Innes. Tomb-robbery and even murder would seem to have been committed a century ago by the forebears of Sir John Jory of New Hall. But Old Hall, the family?s former residence, had become a University. Engaged to write the biography of one of these ancestors, Colin Clout gets caught up in a frantic treasure-hunt which grows more and more hysterical as rival interests and rival claimants probe the past and turn the soil. Culture and breeding fall away like masks as naked greed comes to the fore. The perfect gift for all lovers of classic literature and rare, vintage books.
